"Desert Tears"

$65.00
Sold

6” x 7.5” x 4”
Woodfired stoneware, with kiln ash deposits.
Fired in Mendocino CA, 2018

Value: $165.
FROM THE ARTIST::

This mask is one of a series cast from student faces in Santa Rosa CA.

No glaze was used on the mask before firing. Over the 5 days of woodfiring the buildup of ash deposited on the mask resulted in a natural glaze.

Many of my high school ceramics students in Santa Rosa came from families that crossed the desert to start new lives in the US. Kiln tears are drops of natural ash glaze that build up in the kiln. A kiln tear dripped into an eye of this mask, inspiring the title of the piece.

Stefanie Nagorka, MFA, is a studio artist and potter born in Munich Germany. She has lived also in Turkey and Romania as well as Washington DC, NY/NJ metro area and NorCal. She attended Pratt Institute. She taught art/ceramics in high schools in NJ and CA for 17 years. She has two beloved children and lives now in Portland OR.
